THEME: RELATIONSHIPS (DATING & BOY-GIRL RELATIONSHIPS)
Why do students in secondary school date? Should they be dating? Will this cause them to lose interest in their studies?
.
1. Some reasons why teenagers start dating:
-You have commom interests, or you think alike, and therefore you would like to spend more time with him/her to get to know each other better
-You like and care for that person, and you want to help one another with his/her studies
-You are interested in a member of the opposite sex perhaps because of his/her looks; maybe he/she is funny
-Hormonal changes that makes us more aware of the opposite sex
.
2. Some unhealthy reasons why teenagers start dating:
-You just want to experience the thrill of going on dates because it is a new experience
- To experience physical intimacy
-To show off one's popularity, that one is desired by members of the opposite sex
-You give in to peer pressure: just because youe friends are dating, you feel pressured to have a boyfriend/girlfriend
.
3. It's okay to date provided we exercise responsible dating. And by responsible dating, we mean
(a) Behave appropriately in our speech, action and conduct when dating e.g.
- We should be less self-centred and not talk about ourselves all the time. Instead, we should let each other have a choice to voice out our views and opinions. This will give us the room to grow and get to know each other better. We should also talk about topics that interest both parties.
-We should respect the other party and try to be punctual for our dates. We don't want our dating partners to break their word with their parents
-Both parties are schooling and are not earning an income, so while dating, we should share the expenses incurred, instead of just expecting the boy to pay all the time.
-We should not engage in harmful and illegal activities such as smoking, consuming alcohol or engage in substance or drug abuse.
-Girls should pay more attention to their dressing and should wear clothes that are appropriate for the occasion. They should not wear clothes that are sexually provocative during dates, and this leads to unnecessary temptations. They may also invite unwanted attention and problems to themselves.
-We should not engage in acts of physical intimacy as the consequences such as unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases are way too heavy and serious for teenagers to bear.
.
b) Address the concerns that our parents may have over us while we are still schooling.
-Our parents love us and they are concerned about our safety, well-being and happiness. They want to know who we are going out with, because they do not want us to be led astray by people with indesirable motives.
-Parents are also concerned that we would be distracted from our studies if we are involved in relationships with the opposite sex
-These are ways in which parents show their love and concern for us.
-As teenagers, we should show our parents that we have taken their concerns into consideration by:
1) Proving that we are responsible and trustworthy by keeping our words and promises
2) Keeping them informed truthfully about what we are doing
.
c) Consider our own safety, the views of others and cost
-When on a date, we should avoid places where we meet undesirable people, and dark and isolated places where we may be in danger of being physically harmed or tempted to engage in physical intimacy.
-When planning activities, we should consider the views of others before deciding what to do. In doing so, we show that we are acting responsibly, and we show awareness and respect for other people's feelings, preferences and concerns.
